Introduction to the seaweeds of inner Bantry Bay
Published in 2020, this booklet by aquatic biologist Frances Gallagher provides an informative and easy to read introduction to the seaweeds of Bantry Bay. It covers the most commonly found seaweeds, zonation of the shore, the importance of seaweeds and the historical role of seaweeds in Irish culture. The 34-page A5 booklet is full of beautiful colour photographs and the cover features a specially commissioned illustration by award-winning botanical artist, Shevaun Doherty.
Mini-guide to the seaweeds of inner Bantry Bay
In 2019 we produced a lovely free mini-guide to the seaweeds of Bantry Bay aimed at children and families. It introduces the shore explorer to what seaweeds are, what they look like and where the three main groups – brown, green and red – can be found.
The guide was written and illustrated by aquatic biologist Frances Gallagher in conjunction with Clare Heardman of the Ellen Hutchins Festival. You can pick up copies of the free leaflet in Bantry Library or Bantry Tourist Office or download a copy below.
Seaweed Pressing Instructions
Download our illustrated, tried & tested, step-by-step instructions to preserve a seaweed specimen. Dry and press a seaweed specimen for your own herbarium or use it to create seaweed art.
The instructions were developed by aquatic biologist Frances Gallagher, who regularly runs seaweed foraging, identification and specimen workshops in Co Cork.
The book and mini-guide on this page were developed by the Ellen Hutchins Festival with funding from Fisheries Local Action Group South in 2019 and 2020. The Seaweed Pressing Instructions were funded by the County Cork Heritage Grant Scheme in 2022.
