Audio Guide with letter extracts

Dive straight in and listen to extracts from Ellen’s letters to botanist, Dawson Turner (6 minutes or so) here or discover Ellen’s story through the Audio Guide (11 tracks, each of about 3-4 minutes). 

The audio guide provides an introduction to Ellen’s story and Bantry Bay where she did all her plant hunting. Ellen’s story is told using her letters and the journal of a Welsh botanist who visited her at Ballylickey. You can also use the interactive story map showing places important to Ellen, which links to the audio guide (both free resources). Hear poignant extracts from Ellen’s letters, and learn how she coped with illness and caring responsibilities that tied her to home, using botany as her ‘amusement’. How she longed to get to the mountains, and how determined she was to understand the non-flowering plants better and to share new knowledge with her fellow botanists.
