Tree Trails
Ireland & Bantry House
We have developed two Tree Trails and both are best done when all the trees have their leaves on, so spring, summer or autumn are fine, but not in the winter. The Tree Trail for anywhere in Ireland has twelve native tree species that can be found in woodlands and hedgerows.
The other trail is to the trees (and one shrub) in the gardens at Bantry House, many of which are exotic.
The Twelve Tree Trail was developed for West Cork, but can be used anywhere in Ireland where there are trees. Try and find the species featured near where you live or are staying. As well as identification tips, the downloadable leaflet has a host of interesting facts and snippets of information. Although designed with kids in mind, it will appeal to anyone who has an interest in nature. Download a copy using the button below.
The leaflet was developed by the Ellen Hutchins Festival with funding from Fisheries Local Action Group South in 2020.
The Ellen Hutchins Tree and Shrub Trail at Bantry House Gardens takes visitors on a tour of nine trees and one shrub from around the world. They include Mountain Pepper from Australia, Gingko from China, Chilean Myrtle and our native Irish Hazel and Oak. There is one plant that is either tree nor shrub, with the biggest of leaves.
The leaflet has fun facts, descriptions of trees and ideas for tree-related activities. It is designed to be taken home and coloured in.
